Champions Crowned at Long Beach Sea Festival |

Todd Haig and Kim Lumley won the Men’s and Women’s open titles at the Catalina Water Ski Ra ce, while Team CRC repeated as champion of the Rum Run during the Long Beach Sea Festival last weekend.
Haig won a record eighth Catalina Ski Race and has won the 52-mile race from Long Beach to Catalina and back four years in a row. Lumley put on an equally dominating performance, capturing her fourth straight ski race. The event put Long Beach Boat and Ski Club celebrated its 60th anniversary this year.

Powerboat P1 Debuts Makes Tunisian Debut |
|
The latest racing action from the Powerboat P1 World Championship racing series took place in Tunisia on th e weekend of July 11-13. Both classes, Evolution and SuperSport, experienced highly competitive racing.
In SuperSport racing, the #07 VoomVoom.com was unable to catch up to the #44 Conam Yachts team, which has been dominating the class all season. The Conam Yachts team remains in first in the championships standings, with the VoomVoom.com team 190 points behind. Having been unable to defeat the former champions in any individual race this season, pilot Gareth Williams remains optimistic about his team’s future.

Restaurateur and Offshore Racer Rocky Aoki Dies |
|
Offshore racer and founder of the Japanese restaurant chain Benihana, Rocky Aoki, died July 14. He was 69.
Aoki opened his first restaurant in 1964 in Manhattan, N.Y., saw the publicly traded company grow to more than 90 restaurants worldwide and 5,000 employees during his lifetime.
Aoki was an avid boater. In July 1979, he won the Benihana Grand Prix offshore powerboat race, a race that he organized and created near Point Pleasant, N.J. That same year, he crashed his 38-foot Cougar catamaran in San Francisco Bay. He suffered a ruptured aorta, a lacerated liver and broke his leg in four places.
